With most everyone I talk to recently, there seems to be a common thread in how people are feeling about their lives and homes. Everyone is yearning for simpler times.

After so many years of overconsumption and microtrends, finally it feels like the tide is turning. People are wanting to invest in quality again and bring a sense of calm to their home through their decor.

Buying everything new is being protested and the rise of antiques and secondhand have brought rustic and primitive design styles back to the forefront of people’s minds.

A home that feels lived in and used is a home that feels cozy and calm to me. What I love about a rustic design style is the feeling that everything in the home has a purpose beyond just looking nice.

What you’ll find throughout these primitive wall decor ideas is a sense of functionality tied in with beauty. Wall decor doesn’t always have to be framed art and things that aren’t interacted with.

The best primitive wall decor ideas add visual interest to the blank spaces in your home, but also add convenience or extra storage!

Before we dive in to ways to incorporate this design style into your home, let’s look at what primitive decor can be defined by and what makes it unique.

Primitive Wall Decor Ideas Essentials

  • Primitive Style
  • Natural Materials
  • Warm Color Palette
  • Rustic Objects
Primitive Style:

So what even is primitive style? It sounds slightly archaic and maybe even barbaric when one first hears it, but it’s actually quite cozy and classic.

Primitive decor is function-forward and minimalist. It’s reminiscent of a time before furniture and goods were created by factories, but everything made by hand and with quality craftsmanship.

It should be simple, yet beautiful in it’s design and never lacking a purpose.

Natural Materials:

In order to achieve this historic look and feel, you should be looking for natural materials while shopping and thrifting.

Everything should appear as if it could have been made by hand and from natural elements. This includes textiles like wool, jute, and cotton.

For larger furniture you’ll want to stick to primarily wood and leather pieces.

Color Palette

You can always play with color when it comes to smaller accessories and artwork, but for the bulk of your design you’ll want to stick to Earthy tones.

These primitive wall decor ideas are best suited for those who prefer warmer color palettes as opposed to cool tones and grays.

If you are including brighter colors, it is wise to choose colors that can be found in nature and to avoid bright neon fabricated colors.

Rustic Objects

Though some new furniture can be made to appear rustic and antique, for the most part you will want to stick to finding older vintage pieces for these primitive wall decor ideas.

The whole idea of a primitive design style is that it is reminiscent of an earlier and simpler time in home decor, so surely the best way to accomplish that look is shopping for vintage finds.

You want your pieces to look lived in and well used. Small cosmetic flaws can even be welcomed to bring that truly homey feeling to your space.

1. Antique Drawers

I’m obsessed with antique drawers and vintage medicine cabinets.

They always draw my eye at secondhand stores, but I sometimes struggle to know how to incorporate them into my home.

Embracing the clutter, though, and hanging multiple drawers next to each other creates this beautiful almost apothecary effect on the wall.

2. A Touch of Country Charm

One of the best primitive wall decor ideas is to incorporate farm and home tools into your decor.

Make your home feel like a rustic country farm cottage by strategically placing a vintage pitchfork as seen above.

I also love the incorporation of different farm animals throughout the decor to add a touch of country charm.

3. Dried Flowers and Herbs

By hanging dried flowers, herbs, and other foliage on the walls and ceiling of your home, you can create this stunning effect of an effervescent country home.

Not only will bundles look beautiful, but they will add a fragrant aroma to your home that feels primitive and authentic.

Utilize your dried herbs throughout the year by using them in your cooking for a fully functional design accessory!

4. Hanging Baskets

shop hanging wall baskets

Use multiple hanging baskets of different sizes, colors, and weave throughout your kitchen as a beautiful form of visual interest.

They will also create great storage opportunities for fruit, herbs, and other miscellaneous kitchen objects.

When it comes these primitive wall decor ideas, more layers and more textures are always better!

5. Antique Oil Lamps

Antique oil lamps are items that look beautiful and primitive all on their own.

They don’t need much more accoutrement to make a statement, so keep things simple by letting them be the focal point.

I love the idea as seen above of hanging a few different sizes of lamp next to each other on a simple piece of barn wood.

6. Ceramic Vases and Jugs

Ceramics have the key to my heart and I think they are the ultimate home decor.

I have an extensive collection in my own home of ceramic dishes and vases, and the great thing about it is, the more I come to own, the better my decor looks!

Ceramics look beautiful when piled next to other pieces of varying shapes, sizes, and colors. Incorporate some open shelving on your wall and start piling on the ceramics for this stunning primitive look!

7. Candle Holders

There are so many different types of candle holder, candelabras, and chandeliers like the ones seen above and beyond!

Use faux flickering candles to create the effect of gorgeous candles throughout your home without the fire hazard.

This is a great way to bring warm and welcoming light into your home if you are short on outlets!

9. Hanging Quilt Ladder

I have said it in MANY of my rustic design posts so far (check out my mountain cabin decor ideas or rustic cabin bedrooms ideas to see what I mean) that it’s about time for quilts to make a comeback!

Stitched quilts are BEAUTIFUL and a wonderful way to add color and pattern into your home.

This horizontal hung quilt ladder is such a clever idea and a stunning way to dress up what otherwise would have been a bare wall.

10. Stone Accent Wall

Adding a stone accent wall to your home is a sure fire way to bring a primitive feel to any room.

Don’t worry, though, you don’t have to actually build a stone wall in your home.

You can achieve a very realistic stone wall effect with stone veneer as a much easier and more affordable alternative!

11. Antique Books

The great thing about antique books as primitive wall decor ideas is they can be placed, stacked, and styled in pretty much every corner of your home.

Every shelf will look better and more curate with a few vintage books scattered throughout.

Most antique and thrift stores sells beautiful books like this for pennies because they’re often titles that people don’t read much anymore.

12. Layered Signs

If you really want to add some personality and quirk to your primitive wall design, adding vintage signage is a great way to do it while still sticking true to the design style.

You could easily make these signs as a fun weekend DIY project, or I’m sure they could be thrifted quite easily as well.

I love the homey and cluttered (but in a curated way) effect this has on the kitchen seen above.

13. Assorted Hanging Shelves

Assorted hanging shelving might just be my favorite of the primitive wall decor ideas on this list.

I just can’t get over how simple, functional, yet beautiful it is.

Especially if you have a smaller home with minimal storage, this is a fantastic way to kill two birds with one stone by decorating your walls, and creating storage for miscellaneous housewares.

14. Rustic Mirror

Source

shop rustic window mirrors

Mirrors make fantastic wall decor because they create multi-dimensional visual interest.

They will reflect the natural light in the room as well as make your room feel bigger due to the reflections!

You could either DIY a window mirror like the one seen above or source a rustic mirror and hang it by a chain for extra flare!

15. Miscellaneous Kitchenware

If budget is tight or you’re not looking to add a lot of new objects into your home, there is so much you can do with what you already have!

Use cutting boards, rolling pins, cheese graters, colanders, and any other type of vintage kitchen ware as decor.

If you grow your own garlic and onions, braided garlic strands or bushels of onions make beautiful primitive decor for your kitchen as well.

More than ever, small businesses need our support! More than ever, small businesses need our support!

Between tariffs driving up prices for business owners and consumers tightening their wallets more and more every day, it matters now more than ever where we spend our dollar.

Don’t get me wrong, I definitely understand the ease and often the affordability of Amazon, but I’ve learned some things in the 5 months I haven’t used Amazon.

1. I never needed 80% of the things I was buying. I fell victim to the “must have” lists and “get it now while it’s on sale” posts ALL. THE. TIME. It was nothing that ever added value to my life.

2. I didn’t even end up liking half the things I bought. Forever my biggest argument for shopping local with clothes and home decor is that you CANNOT know if you like something until you hold it in your hands or try it on your body.

3. I learned to be patient with my purchases. When you’re shopping in person, you have the luxury of walking around the store. You spend time with the item, you consider it next to other items, and you give yourself time to put something back that you maybe didn’t need.

4. I was BURNINGGGG through paychecks from small Amazon orders. My bank account has been THANKING me for the decision to shop small and secondhand.

I have my own feelings about Amazon and its effect on the Earth and on local economies, but I hope that at least one of the reasons above can convince you to decrease your time on Amazon and increase your time in local stores.

I know it can feel overwhelming to make the shift to small and secondhand, but that’s why I started posting content on this page in the first place!

To try and make that transition feel easy and exciting for everyone. So if you’re looking for tips or inspiration, be sure to follow @romanticizingrach!

I’ve found some AWESOMEEE secondhand pieces this weekend that I’ll be sharing in a haul tomorrow. You guys will be GAGGED.

So what do you think? Are you on board?? 😍😍

This Tiffany shade has been sitting in my garage f This Tiffany shade has been sitting in my garage for months because the top busted, but I couldn’t get myself to just toss it 😩

I come across broken Tiffany shades at secondhand stores constantly!! Always for pennies and always beautiful just with some glass missing or a broken piece.

It always hurts my heart to leave them behind, but now I will be grabbing every single one I find 🥲

Just imagine a garden filled with planters like these 😍

In honor of hitting 100K and this awesome @siouxfa In honor of hitting 100K and this awesome @siouxfallsstage issue being published on the same day, I thought I’d take the time to tell you guys more about me!

You all know my name is Rachel and I live in a charming 100 year old little cottage in South Dakota. What you probably don’t know, though, is how we got here or what I’m doing when not at home! Here’s some things to know about me in no particular order 😍

1. I grew up in the suburbs of Minneapolis! I love Minnesota with all my heart and am thankful to visit often as most of my immediate family still lives there ☺️

2. I studied musical theatre and dance at the University of South Dakota and have since leaned into a new role as choreographer in the Sioux Falls theatre scene! It has brought me so much joy to stay connected to this part of myself since becoming a mom. Sioux Falls theatre is the best 🫶🏻

3. I’ve lived in multiple states including New York and South Carolina, but have happily settled in South Dakota and I love this state with my whole heart 🦬

4. I started posting consistently last November and never could have guessed what an awesome community would have come from it! I’ve always been passionate about making my home a cozy and inviting space but never thought so many people would relate to my love for shopping small and secondhand 🥹

5. I work part time as a nanny/house manager for a wonderful family. It’s been the biggest blessing of my life to have a job that allows me to have Archer by my side everyday in his formative years. ❤️

I can’t express how grateful I am to have so many of you following along and giving me a place to be creative. Posting on this app has brought me so much happiness and has truly allowed me to find myself again after becoming a mom.

If you want to learn more about Sioux Falls theatre and meet the other amazing artists featured in this issue, make sure to check out the latest issue of @siouxfallsstage ! It’s a huge honor to be included among so many talented artists.

Something has been BUGGINNNGG me about this room f Something has been BUGGINNNGG me about this room for ages 😩

I absolutely adore the paneling in this room, and I think in my efforts to feature the beautiful wood, I tried to go minimal with the decor.

But what I actually needed was something with enough contrast to make the wood really pop!

I’m a sucker for a jute rug and initially thought that’s what I would put in this space. I fell DEEPLY in love with this unique shag from @revival , though, and I’m SO GLAD I decided to trust my gut. It’s the Rojda Shag Rug in 5x8! 😍

It’s the perfect amount of color and texture so the wood paneling gets to truly SHINE.

What do you think? Did I make the right call?? 🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️
