I am a plaid girl through and through.

Whether it’s a blue and green tartan, an adorable sage green gingham, or a good old red buffalo check, I can’t get enough.

There’s something about the pattern that feels so nostalgic and whimsical, while still look classic and timeless.

That makes it the perfect pattern for a nursery!

Buffalo plaid in particular is very reminiscent of warm cozy cabins and spending time in the woods and wilderness.

If you want your little one to grow up with an adventurous and outdoors-y spirit, then start them out early by cultivating that feeling in their room!

Maybe it doesn’t make any kind of difference, but I feel like the colors and patterns our little ones grow up with must affect their development in some small way.

Anyway, I won’t try to convince you any further. Whether it will cultivate the spirit of adventure in them or not, it’s still an adorable and beautiful pattern that is certain to cozy up your home.

So let’s take a look at a few different places in your child’s room where it would be easy to incorporate these buffalo plaid nursery ideas!

The easiest way to incorporate a new pattern or color into your child’s nursery is by starting out with a throw pillow or two!

They add coziness and flare, but they’re far from permanent and can be easily swapped out if you decide you’re not a fan.

Throw a couple in the crib to decorate the space while baby’s not sleeping or on a glider chair in the corner of the room!

2. Black and White

I love red buffalo check, don’t get me wrong, but sometimes it can feel very overwhelming!

I’m not always looking to add a bright pop of color depending on what other furniture pieces I have throughout the space.

Thankfully, most everything you can get in red buffalo plaid also comes in black and white buffalo plaid! You get all the same charm but it’s a bit more subtle.

3. Mobile

One of my favorite decorative items to splurge on in a nursery is a mobile. They’re so cute and classic that I just melt over them every time.

This plaid mobile with little bears and trees is just perfect for a woodland or cabin themed nursery.

I love how the homeowner in the photo above matched the buffalo check in the mobile with the little accents on the crib sheets as well.

4. Patchwork Quilt

When I tell you I’m in a quilt PHASE, I mean I truly cannot stop thinking about them and where to get more.

Nothing adds charm to your space better than a patchwork quilt and in my opinion, it’s an absolute must for anyone putting together a nursery.

Obviously, your baby won’t be using the quilt in bed for at least a year or two, but I know I spent almost just as much time sleeping in my son’s nursery as he did and definitely always needed blankets.

5. Custom Name Sign

I’ve been seeing a rise in popularity with custom name signs for nursery decor and I’m obsessed with the trend.

I love any kind of decor choice that can also become a treasured memory many years later and these signs are just that.

This sign could hang in a cabin or playroom many years after your child is little and will always bring back memories of those first few precious years!

6. Bean Bag Chair

This was something that we never got for my son’s nursery until he was older but I wish we would have gotten some kind of chair right away!

Babies love to do anything that adults do so whenever I would try to sit in the rocker, my son would always try to copy me.

However, it never felt safe to let him climb onto the big chair so it would have been perfect to have something small like this plush chair he could climb all over on.

7. Wallpaper

Buffalo Plaid Peel & Stick Wallpaper

Wallpaper is THEE trend for nurseries this decade and I especially love a bold plaid wallpaper!

Because I have a slight fear of bright colors, I would personally go with this black and white buffalo plaid if I was re-wallpapering my son’s room.

But if you’re bold and want to go the unique route, a red buffalo check wallpaper would be the coolest statement wall for the coolest kid!

8. Decorative Garland

One of the easiest ways to add some fun flare or decorate a blank wall in a nursery is with some fabric garland.

It’s an easy DIY project if you’re the crafty custom type, or it’s a great budget-friendly option on Amazon as well.

I love how it ties in the buffalo plaid in a more subtle way. Then you can tie in the pattern in other places with pillows and throws so the pattern doesn’t overwhelm the space.

9. Throw Blankets

I live in South Dakota and keeping my baby warm during the winter months is a constant worry of mine.

The easiest way for me to combat the cold is to have blankets everywhere in the house!

Not only do they come in handy all the time, but it’s a fun way to introduce color, pattern, and texture into my home in a non-permanent way.

10. Window Curtains

Black out curtains are an absolute must for a nursery, but unfortunately, black out curtains are usually not the cutest design choice.

That’s why I was thrilled when I found these buffalo plaid black our curtain panels! What a fun way to bring the heart of adventure into your little one’s room.

Plus, hopefully they’ll sleep a tad longer in the mornings without the sunlight peering in!

11. Crib Sheets

You wouldn’t even believe how many times you’ll have to change the sheets in your crib if you’re a first-time mom prepping for your first baby.

Between blowouts, spit up, and good old-fashioned wetting the bed, it’s a must to have multiples on hand.

This four pack of buffalo plaid crib sheets is affordable and an easy way to incorporate the pattern into your baby’s room!

12. Changing Station

In those first few months, you’ll spend more time at a changing table than you think! I couldn’t believe just how often you’re changing a diaper from months 0-3.

Might as well make it a cozy space for both you and your baby. Red buffalo plaid is a very forgiving pattern, so you don’t have to worry too much about stains.

These changing pad covers from Amazon are also incredibly soft and will feel lovely on your little one’s skin straight out of the bath!

13. Large Rug

It will take a whole year if not more before your baby is walking on two feet, so it’s important that they have a soft place to crawl around before then!

A large rug in the nursery is more than just a design choice, it’s also very practical for play time and walking practice.

Rugs of this size can get very expensive very quickly so I could hardly believe it when I found this beautiful black and white check rug for such a great price on Amazon!

Amazon links have become so common that we don’t Amazon links have become so common that we don’t even think twice about using them, but should we?

I used to shop from Amazon WEEKLY. Picking up little things here and there to follow trends or utilizing the ease of fast delivery to my door.

But I never felt great about it knowing that there were small businesses out there that needed my money more. I just never knew where to find them.

That’s why I wanted to create this platform! To make shopping small and secondhand feel easy and sexy again.

If you’re not convinced yet, here are my top 3 reasons to stop shopping Amazon:
1. Sustainability- In 2019, Amazon’s carbon emissions (ONE company) surpassed that of the entire country of Norway. And it’s only grown since (like by A LOT).
2. Unfair Pay for Workers- Though they’re a multi-billion dollar corporation, most employees aren’t making enough to support their families.
3. THERE ARE NO ETHICAL BILLIONAIRES- I don’t want Jeff Bezos getting a penny from me 🥰

I also feel strongly that delivery services are the greatest contributor to the loneliness epidemic we’re experiencing today. We belong in public spaces, interacting with other humans at thrift stores and brick and mortar shops.

If any of this resonates with you, give @romanticizingrach a follow so together we can find the best small business alternatives and hold each other accountable to shopping secondhand 🫶🏻

Have to give my parents credit for this as well be Have to give my parents credit for this as well because even though I know now we were struggling, they never made it our problem as children.

Having less forced us to be outside more, be home more, spend more time together, and get through the hard times as a unit. It taught me to sacrifice and to be resilient, and I want my child to learn those same lessons in life.

Now obviously I’m not talking about the kind of poverty that leaves children hungry and uncared for, but most families live in the gray area between poverty and a comfortable middle class.

Don’t let anyone make you feel like you’re a bad parent if you’re in that gray area and living paycheck to paycheck. If your kids needs are met and you are loving them as hard as you can, then you’re doing more than enough to set them up for a life of happiness.

Do you agree with this take or am I totally off base???

It is so challenging to hold on to the passions that bring you joy after becoming a mom. I’m so grateful to have the opportunity to do things like this and be given grace and acceptance to bring my son with me everywhere I go.

In the darkness, we have to look for the light. Connect with your community, make some imperfect art, sing some songs that make you happy, and come back stronger with renewed hope.
