It’s hard for me to sit down and try to type out the reasons why I have always loved the 4th of July. Since I was a kid, it has been my favorite holiday (second only to Christmas).

Though I’m sure the carnivals, parades, and fireworks have a lot to do with this, it was also something deeper than that. Something about the 4th has always felt very nostalgic and romantic to me.

It’s a day where everyone tries to get outdoors, eat some grilled food, and play some outdoor games and sports all for the sake of celebrating our country.

My memories of the holiday are filled with sunshine, popsicles, hot dogs, and funnel cakes! What’s not to love?

So naturally, because it’s so nostalgic for me, I really lean towards vintage-feeling decor for the holiday. Rustic 4th of July decor is the perfect way to bottle that nostalgia and infuse it all over your home.

Especially now that I’m a mom, I want the 4th of July to feel just as magical for my little one as it did for me!

As you’re starting to get inspired for your own home decor, here are a few options for places to decorate in your home:

Places to add Rustic 4th of July Decor:

  • Front Porch
  • Front Door
  • Fireplace Mantel
  • Shelves and Book Cases
  • Dining Table Centerpiece
  • Coffee Table Centerpiece
  • Coffee Bar
  • Empty Wall Space
  • Empty Corner Space
  • Back Patio or Deck
  • Really anywhere else that could use a fun holiday touch!

If the decor ideas aren’t percolating yet, just keep scrolling and I guarantee you’ll find something you love.

Nothing scream summer in American to me like plaid patterns. ESPECIALLY when they’re in red, white, and blue!

Use a plaid tablecloth, plaid place mats, or plaid napkins if you’re seeing a Fourth of July table.

Add an extra touch of rustic charm with wood cookie chargers or other natural materials like wicker and rattan.

2. Star Spangled Banner Pillows

A great way to add rustic 4th of July decor to your home this summer in a subtle way is pillows with different patterns.

Some can have stars, maybe others have stripes, or maybe their all one single color but you find some in red and others in white.

Have fun mixing and matching styles to create the perfect design for your couch or a little window reading nook.

3. Amber Waves of Vases

We’ve all heard about the beauty of amber waves of grain, but amber vases are beautiful too!

I love this centerpiece using a vintage milk crate and various amber and glass vases of all sizes.

Just add a few small American flags to your display and you’ve got a beautiful rustic centerpiece.

4. Framed Historical Remembrances

If you’re a history buff or simply like the look of old things, this gallery wall of historical remembrances is perfect for your home.

You can either find prints on Etsy or source them yourself from different vintage and antique shops near you.

Ideas for this include anything referencing the year America became a sovereign nation or vintage newspaper clippings from 4th of July’s past!

5. Antique Containers

shop vintage tin lunchboxes

Sometimes the easiest way to make a vintage decor vignette is by layering antique containers.

This 4th of July, look for any cool looking container that has patriotic colors on it then layer away!

You can fill them with flag, beads, or even just leave them empty. The vintage labels will have plenty of visual interest on their own.

6. Wicker and Wood Place Settings

shop wicker chargers

If you’re hosting a dinner party and looking to build a rustic 4th of July decor tablescape, the best place to start is with natural materials.

I like what this table has done keeping the decor in mostly neutral colors, and adding in the pops of color with the food.

When shopping for your table decor, look for materials like natural wood, leather, wicker, and linen!

7. Vintage Prints and Textiles

I’m obsessed with these vintage textiles turned decor in the living room above.

Look for old grain bags or even coffee bags that have red, white, and blue colors or American flags.

You can drape these beautiful relics on the back of chairs, on bookshelves, or for the especially crafty, make your own throw pillows.

8. Rustic Banner Garland

This rustic banner garland would make a great DIY project for the family to take on together this summer!

You could either find stars and stripes fabrics from your local craft store, or use fabric paint to create your own pattern.

Then just fray the edges of your triangles, hang them on a piece of twine, and you have your own beautiful rustic 4th of July decor.

9. Framed Colonial Paintings

shop framed colonial paintings

A beautiful framed colonial painting or print is the perfect way to tie in some 4th of July charm to your home this July without being too obvious.

If you’re a fan of more subtle decor that isn’t in your face and loud, consider going this route.

Most colonial paintings will provide the right decor vibe, but bonus points if you can find one that has an American flag already in the painting!

10. American Flag as a Table Centerpiece

shop large american flags

Using a full size American flag in your home as decor may seem like a challenging ask, but this is a really stunning way to try it.

Use a large wicker basket as the base for your centerpiece, then layer in fresh or fake flowers, and top it with a purposefully draped flag that splays around the piece.

I find this look to be a very elegant and tasteful way to tie in your rustic 4th of July decor into your home.

11. Burlap Banner Sign

Credit: @_martina.c._

shop burlap banner kits

I love a good burlap banner sign and the 4th of July is the perfect holiday to utilize this cute decor item!

There are kits you can purchase to create your own banner sign with a customized message, or you can easily purchase the materials at a craft store as well.

These signs are great to hang from shelves, mantels, or even look great across your front door as porch decor.

12. Subtle Patriotic Touches

shop blue and white fake flowers

The easiest and fastest way to decorate for holidays is to just add subtle touches to your already existing decor.

If you have a well designed hutch or shelf in your home that you’d prefer not to touch, then don’t touch it!

Just decorate around it by adding a few accessories with your themed colors. I love the way they’ve added some blue flowers to their greenery in the design above!

13. Weathered Wooden Flag Fireplace Cover

Now unless you live in the uppermost parts of Alaska, I’m guessing you aren’t using your fireplace in the middle of July!

Don’t let the extra space go to waste and make decor out of it instead.

A weathered wooden American flag is the perfect way to cover your fireplace and bring a little rustic 4th of July decor into the heart of your home.

14. Farmhouse Style Bunting Flags

shop american flag buntings

Ever since I was a little girl, I have dreamed of having a large front porch with a railing I can hang flag buntings on every fourth of July!

Though I have yet to own a house with a railed front porch, I still love the look of buntings and think they can be incorporated in your interior decor as well.

Something about them is so nostalgic to me and add a cozy vintage touch to any home.

15. Layered Baskets

Credit: @theoldhouseonmain

shop large woven baskets

One of my favorite rustic decor hacks is layering baskets with different shapes, sizes, and weaves.

It’s pretty impossible to screw up this look as most baskets look great together.

Then just fill the insides with themed decor pillows, blankets, and flags to really amp up your holiday decor.

16. Large Wooden Stars

These large wooden stars made from scrap pieces of wood are the perfect rustic 4th of July decor item for indoor and outdoor decorating.

These would be easy enough to piece together from scrap wood in your own garage, or could be made with something like paint stirring sticks or old yard sticks!

I like this look of keeping them all a weathered white, but they could also look great painted in coordinating red, white, and blue colors.

17. Wooden Post “Fireworks”

I think of all the ideas on this list, this one might be my favorite!

These unique wooden post turned firework decor is different from anything else I’ve seen when it comes to rustic decor for the 4th.

These could be easily DIY-ed, or you can purchase them at the store linked below the picture. These would be perfect for your front porch, a corner in your home, or anywhere you’re looking to add some height to your decor.

18. Color Scheme Tapered Candles

shop red, white, and blue tapered candles

A beautiful set of vintage candle holders is a great investment because candles can be used as decor for any season or holiday!

Tapered candles come in all kinds of colors and designs so you can switch out the candles based on the color scheme you’re decorating for.

Pair a patriotic print with some red and white candles on a mantel or dining table to complete this stunning look.

19. Vintage Farmhouse Signs

Credit: @craftybsboutiqueco

shop independence day farmhouse signs

I’m a sucker for some good wooden farmhouse signs with fun and unique sayings on them.

This fireworks sign look especially cute nestled in a vintage milk bottle basket atop red white and blue spindles.

You can dress up your sign like the one above with vintage pieces, or simply hang on a wall with a little extra space on it for this rustic 4th of July decor idea!

20. Front Porch Grapevine Wreath

rustic 4th of July decor

Credit: @thepondsfarmhouse

shop patriotic grapevine wreaths

In this world, there are wreath people, and there are people who don’t understand wreath people.

I personally am a wreath person, and grapevine wreaths are my favorite rustic variation.

Nothing looks more classic than a front door adorned with a holiday wreath. Why confine this fun decor option to just Christmas?

21. Coca-Cola Crate Drink Caddy

Credit: @wallerhomeinteriors

shop vintage coca-cola crates

If you’re planning on hosting any type of outdoor event this 4th like a barbecue or bonfire, this Coca-Cola drink crate is to die for!

The classic red of the Coke emblem is the perfect patriotic red. This look is extra beautiful if you can find vintage Coca-Cola glasses to match.

Tie in some blue with cute drink straws or napkins to complete the look and your guests will be obsessed.

22. Embroidered Star Quilt

rustic 4th of July decor

Credit: @ittybittycottage

shop rustic patchwork quilts

You’ve probably caught on by now if you’ve read any of my other rustic decor posts, that I’m very much into quilts as decor right now.

They add the perfect touch of rustic charm and you can find them in so many beautiful colors and patterns!

If you’re lucky enough to stumble upon one in a red, white, and blue color way before the 4th this year, you can’t let that opportunity pass you by!

23. Primitive Patriotic Flag Decor

Credit: @crystal_tara

shop neutral wooden flags

A great way to bring rustic 4th of July decor into your home for those who prefer neutrals in their decor is this primitive wooden flag wall hang.

Decorating for the 4th doesn’t have to mean bright red, white, and blue in every corner of your home!

Make the look more elevated and sophisticated to suit your taste with a neutral color palette and wooden textures.

24. A Stuffed Star Tiered Tray

rustic 4th of July decor

Credit: @bestlifefarmlife

shop patriotic stuffed stars

These stuffed stars in plaids, ginghams, and star prints are the perfect way to up your decor game this summer!

Plus, these would make an easy and fun project to make with little ones on a rainy summer afternoon.

Stuff these in tiered trays, wicker baskets, or anywhere that needs a little extra rustic decor flare.

25. Hand-Stitched Colonial Flags

Credit: @primitivepigfolkart

How beautiful are these primitive looking colonial flags?

Primitive decor is very on trend this year and you can definitely see why. This beautiful and nostalgic trend is an ode to simpler times and construction.

All you need for this project is some sticks gathered from outside, a sewing kit, and some patriotic colored fabrics for an easy afternoon sewing craft.

Gave my 100 year old walls the after 40 in Hollywo Gave my 100 year old walls the after 40 in Hollywood treatment and now they’re smooth as can be 🤣🤣

I explored so many different ways of addressing our popcorn walls:

I thought about tearing out all the lath and plaster, but was overwhelmed by the mess and thought of dealing with lead and asbestos 😳

I got a quote from a contractor to drywall, but it was nearly $3000 for four walls 😅

That left me with the decision to do it myself. We used 1/4 inch drywall right over the textured plaster. Because it was so thin, we didn’t have to reframe any windows or doors!

Overall with primer and paint included, this came to about $500 and I couldn’t be happier with the result.

We left the popcorn ceiling this time, but I’m thinking about doing shiplap over top. Stick around to see all the ways I’m making my 100 year old beauty come alive again!

I only kind of mean it as a joke 😅😅

There’s nothing wrong with loving a trend and wanting to recreate it in your home! I get inspired by other creators and their homes on the daily.

But I do think that Amazon and LTK have made it a little too easy to copy and paste what you see in someone else’s home!

We’ve lost a little bit of the ability to be INSPIRED. I mean in a way that drives you to find your own personal expression.

I offer this as a challenge, that next time you see a photo of an interior that you truly love…instead of buying all the same things, take a deeper look.

WHAT about the photo do you love? Is it a color scheme? A certain layout or maybe a style of lighting?

Could you find something similar at a secondhand store that’s a better reflection of you and your home? I bet ya could!

And if it really is a certain item that just ticks every box for you, then go ahead and find that link and get yourself that piece 🙂‍↕️

Social media and content is designed to get you whipping out that credit card every time you open the app. The coolest form of resistance is being slow and thoughtful about your spending 😎

Plus, your home will automatically become a better of reflection of YOU and not your fav influencer 😍

Amazon links have become so common that we don’t Amazon links have become so common that we don’t even think twice about using them, but should we?

I used to shop from Amazon WEEKLY. Picking up little things here and there to follow trends or utilizing the ease of fast delivery to my door.

But I never felt great about it knowing that there were small businesses out there that needed my money more. I just never knew where to find them.

That’s why I wanted to create this platform! To make shopping small and secondhand feel easy and sexy again.

If you’re not convinced yet, here are my top 3 reasons to stop shopping Amazon:
1. Sustainability- In 2019, Amazon’s carbon emissions (ONE company) surpassed that of the entire country of Norway. And it’s only grown since (like by A LOT).
2. Unfair Pay for Workers- Though they’re a multi-billion dollar corporation, most employees aren’t making enough to support their families.
3. THERE ARE NO ETHICAL BILLIONAIRES- I don’t want Jeff Bezos getting a penny from me 🥰

I also feel strongly that delivery services are the greatest contributor to the loneliness epidemic we’re experiencing today. We belong in public spaces, interacting with other humans at thrift stores and brick and mortar shops.

If any of this resonates with you, give @romanticizingrach a follow so together we can find the best small business alternatives and hold each other accountable to shopping secondhand 🫶🏻
