When I was growing up and going on vacations with my family, the biggest hindrance to family bonding was maybe a pair of headphones turned up too high or maybe a game boy. Now, I really feel for families who are battling the almighty phone addiction when going on family trips.
It affects adults and kids alike, but the best way to combat it is to have a handful of phone-less family cabin activities tucked into your back pocket.
Well lucky you, I’ve already made that list for you!
The best part about going to the cabin is getting that opportunity to disconnect from the hubbub of every day life and submerse yourself in nature. There’s nothing more grounding and humbling than remembering just how small you are compared to the world.
This sets the scene for some awesome and powerful family bonding! Whether your family struggles with putting the phones down, knowing how to start a conversation, or even just plain old boredom, there’s something for you on this list.
Being at a cabin with your family is easily one of the best vacation options out there. Your kids will love it and there are opportunities galore for fun cabin activities!
So if you have toddlers, middle schoolers, or even adult children with children of their own, keep reading to get inspired to have the time of your lives on vacation this year!

1. Paint the Scenery

Everyone of all ages can enjoy painting, especially when the view is so inspiring! This is a great way to get everyone outside and focused on one project.
Make it a competition to see who can paint the best landscape portrait for extra fun.
Little ones can finger paint, adults or older kids can enjoy a glass of wine as they paint, and viola, the whole family is having a great time!
2. Glow in the Dark Fishing
Everyone expects to go fishing when they spend time at a cabin, but you can make it more memorable by going night fishing!
Buy glow in the dark lures and fishing line then find a dock to camp out at.
These are the kinds of memories that stick with people most. Your family will be telling everyone about their summers going glow in the dark fishing off the dock!
3. Rent a Water Sport

If you’re staying at a cabin near a lake, chances are there’s a little convenience store or sports shop nearby that rents materials for water activities.
Whether it be paddle boarding or pedal boating, sometimes it’s just fun to get in the water a different way!
Just make sure everyone has properly sized life jackets (you can usually rent these as well), and enjoy a day out in the sun and on the water.
4. Classic Water Balloon Fight
You really can’t go wrong with a good old fashioned water balloon fight when it comes to cabin activities ideas. It’s one of those summer memories that everyone has to experience it at some point.
If you have any smaller children that will be present or are worried about injuries in general, this can easily become a water gun fight as well!
The BEST option though is to combine both water balloons and water guns for an all out war. Play somewhere with all kids of obstacles for extra tactic options.
5. Songs Around the Outdoor Fire Pit

It’s a classic, maybe some would argue even a cliche, but you gotta admit, it’s super fun.
If you have anyone in your family or friends that is even slightly musical, you won’t want to miss out on songs around the campfire. There’s something so spiritual, so ancient, about the joy of gathering this way.
I grew up in a very musical family and most of my favorite childhood memories are from making music together. Even if no one can play an instrument, at least get music playing over a speaker!
Play songs that a lot of people know so singing can commence!
6. Board Games and Brews

Don’t sleep on board games with the fam!! If you haven’t had a good old game night in a while, then you’re probably missing out on a lot of great modern board games.
You can either stick to some of the classics like monopoly and apples to apples, or buy an entirely new game that no one knows! That way everyone is starting off on the same foot.
Depending on the age range around the table, it never hurts to crack open a few brews to make the experience a little more colorful.
7. Build a Miniature Golf Course
Everyone loves mini-golf right? Or maybe it’s just me and my family, but I think it’s a great way to pass the time.
Any opportunity to get a little competitive is something I’m down for. Skip the lines and waiting your turns though and opt to build your own course.
The kids will love the creativity that comes with building a course and sourcing all the needed props. Plus you can move at your own speed and everyone can have as many turns as they want (or need)!
8. “Mafia” All Night Long
If you’ve never played the game Mafia with a big group of people, you don’t even KNOW what you’re missing out on. This is my absolute favorite game to play in groups for cabin activities.
If you think you know your friends, think again! Here’s a link with instructions on how to play Mafia both with and without cards.
The dirtier everyone plays, the more fun it is, so let everyone get a little wild and scheme away for some of the most fun you can have in a group setting.
9. Create Your Own Drive-In Theater

I had a friend in Elementary school that lived on a big farm. She would always host these big parties where her family would put up a projector and a sheet and play classic movies.
When I tell you I thought this was the coolest thing EVER. Your family will be absolutely obsessed with this idea!
Set up twinkly lights, some blankets and pillows in your car (or just on the ground), and have plenty of movie theater snacks available for a super memorable night.
10. Large Scale Hide and Seek
By large scale hide and seek, I mainly mean taking things out of the house and into the wild for your family cabin activities!
Especially if you have smaller ones with you, this idea will be a hit. Hide and seek is great way to get the whole family involved, burn some energy, and maybe even take a nap if you’re spot is hidden enough.
Set visual boundaries for safety, but once that’s done, let everyone roam free and enjoy the woods as they hide.
11. Walkie-Talkie Hiking Adventures

I couldn’t tell you what it is about them, but something about walkie talkies is just a blast no matter how old you are.
You could set up a “Charlie to base” style adventure game, or simply explore the cabin property while everyone has a walkie in hand.
There’s no better way to get everyone talking and communicating than to make the form of communication super FUN.
12. Rent E-Bikes and Explore the Town

Most great campsites and cabin towns have some sort of quaint and cute downtown area nearby. They usually come with a couple of fantastic cafes and maybe even an ice cream shoppe.
These towns are super fun to explore, but oftentimes, cabins are in the mountains and the terrain in the area is tough to bike.
This is where E-bikes come in! Either rent them in advance, or see if there’s a spot in town that rents them, and don’t worry about tiring on hills as the family explores the area.
13. Ice Cream Sundae Night
If you don’t luck out with an ice cream shoppe in town, or you’re like me and simply cannot get enough ice cream, create a sundae bar!
Your kiddos will GEEK when they see your beautifully set up sundae bar full of cookie toppings, gummy worms, and caramel sauces.
The sky is the limit with your topping options. If you’re going to let your kiddos splurge on sugar, might as well go big or go home.
14. Share Your High’s and Low’s
This is an activity I used to do in college all the time when my friends and I would go out. Sometimes the hardest part about group settings is getting the conversation flowing.
Sharing your highs and lows of the day is the perfect way to inspire conversation during cabin activities! It’s as simple as it sounds. Everyone just goes around and shares the best part of their day and the worst part of their day.
This is also a great way for kids to wrap up a chaotic day and reflect. Plus, you get some insight into the things they love doing, and the things they hate!
15. Bug Collecting and Butterfly Hatching

Butterflies, beetles, and caterpillars never get less interesting as you age. It will always be fun to explore all the little wonders of nature!
Equip your family with bug catching gear and simply set them loose. Check out my list of nature toys for toddlers for extra inspo for the littlest of your group.
Not only is this a great way to get everyone outside and digging in the dirt, but it will be fun to come back together that evening with all your finds to discuss.
16. Polar Plunging in the Morning

Now I’m not going to lie, a polar plunge isn’t for everyone, but it’s something I LOVE doing when I’m near water. Though albeit a bit jarring, it’s a GREAT way to start your day.
You’re bonding first thing in the morning by rallying everyone early. Have coffee or hot chocolate ready so everyone can have a warm beverage in hand.
Suit up and get outside while the sun is rising for a cool dip in the lake! The cold water wakes everyone up and gets the giggles going early. This is a great cabin activities tradition to start with your family as something to look forward to every trip.
17. Hammocks and Books

Hammocking while at a cabin in the woods is such a fun and relaxing pastime. You can purchase hammocks for all ages and sizes, plus they can be stacked on top of each other in the trees!
I’m a huge proponent of setting time to read as a family. The best way to get your littles reading is by creating a culture of reading within the family.
Make sure everyone has a good book that their excited to dive into, and set a timer for 30 minutes to an hour for everyone to lounge and read together. Chances are, many will want to continue after the hour is up!
18. Rock Tumbling
Rock Tumbling may seem like a totally geeky option, but it is actually such a fun hobby to take on as a family!
When I was a kid, I was obsessed with the smooth and pretty tumbled rocks you could purchase at gift shops. I wish I had known back then how easy it was to create these at home.
The best part about rock tumbling for cabin activities is you’re creating memories and souvenirs. Kids will love creating these little keepsakes and bringing back handfuls to gift to their friends at school.
19. Yard Games Olympics

If there’s a million fans of yard games, I’m on of them. If there are none, then know that I’m dead. I’m yard games biggest fan.
From corn hole to badminton, there really isn’t a wrong choice of yard game. Purchase or borrow a few options from friends and create your very own family Olympics!
You’ll have so much fun under the sun all day bonding with your family and friends. Nothing like a little friendly competition to get conversation (or trash talk) flowing!
20. Build a Slip and Slide

It’s big, it’s maybe a little dangerous, and it’s a romping good time. A slip and slide is an absolute must for family cabin activities.
Whether you purchase your own slip and slide set or build one from scratch, EVERYONE is going to be on board with participating.
Pro tip is to add a little dish soap to your slip and slide for extra slide power to avoid injuries or bumpy rides!
