15 Rustic Top of Dresser Decor Ideas for a Stunning Vintage Bedroom

In this post, we’ll look at fifteen of the best rustic top of dresser decor ideas that will take your bedroom decor from average to expertly designed and elegant!

Last Updated: 11/27/24

When it comes to designing small homes and smaller rooms, it really comes down to the details.

One of my favorite places to decorate in my own home is on the top of my dressers! It’s right at eye level and can instantly transform a bedroom from cluttered to elevated.

Knowing how to decorate this surprisingly large space can be a challenge, though.

Too many small pieces can make this area look cluttered. Too many big pieces, though, and your room suddenly looks clunky. I’m here to help you find that perfect balance!

Often we use the tops of our dressers for storage of smaller things like jewelry or perfumes. The challenge becomes how to keep the much needed storage space, but make our everyday items look beautiful and purposeful.

The key to good top of dresser decor is balancing out the upper half of the room with how heavy and large the furniture piece itself is.

All of the ideas on this list are easy to achieve, affordable to purchase, and tie in that rustic flare we’re all so fond of.

Keep scrolling to find the perfect ideas to not only maximize the space in your small bedroom, but create a beautiful vignette that makes your decor feel elevated and purposeful.

1. Brass Accents

One of the best ways to elevate the look of your top of dresser decor is to tie in brass and metallic accents.

A great way to make your decor look cohesive is to match the metallic colors to your dresser pulls! Whether that means matching the preexisting ones or purchasing new ones.

Candlesticks, lamps, and jewelry plates are perfect items to shop for in brass or gold. Stick to warm tones to really achieve that rustic look.

2. Stacked Decorative Books

I love the look of stacked books on a dresser, especially if you can thrift or shop for ornate vintage hardcover books.

A pro decor tip is to look for encyclopedia sets at antique stores or flea markets because they tend to have very lovely matching covers.

Let the stack stand alone or place other accessories on top for added height and visual interest.

3. Vintage Accessories Tray

Credit: @saratoufali

The thing that’s unique about top of dresser decor is that it often has to be as functional as it is beautiful.

We use dressers for all kinds of storage and often the tops are used to store jewelry, perfumes, or other every day items.

The perfect solution to this need is a beautiful vintage tray that can organize your small accessories, while making your decor cohesive.

4. Charming Ceramic Decor

Adding ceramic pieces to your home decor is the perfect way to incorporate some natural materials and Earthiness for a rustic touch.

The great thing about ceramics is they come in all shapes and sizes. Whether it’s ceramic vases, or something more unique like these adorable ceramic mushrooms, they always add a unique touch.

You never have to buy ceramic pieces new because you can always find beautiful and unique artwork at thrift stores or local markets from individual artists.

5. Rustic Antlers

If you already have a pretty good handle on your top of dresser decor but just want to add a bit of rustic flare, consider adding decorative antlers!

These small but effective decor pieces won’t take up much space, but definitely make the room feel more like a mountain cabin.

You can find these in all different colors and shapes so it blends in with your decor instead of looking out of place.

6. Printed Lampshades

In my opinion, every dresser top should include a statement lamp with a fun printed shade.

Especially if your bedroom doesn’t have very much natural lighting, a lamp with an amber bulb will add beautiful ambient light to your space.

I’m obsessed with this gorgeous black and white gingham lampshade paired next to dark black and brown decor pieces.

7. Large Wicker Statement Mirror

Credit: @ourmainesaltbox

Hanging a mirror above a dresser is the perfect way to elevate your top of dresser decor, and create space for a mirror near where you’re getting dressed every day.

Go for a large mirror that really fills out the wall space above your dresser. For that beautiful rustic look, search for a mirror frame in natural textures.

Rattan or wicker mirrors are the perfect option to tie in that Earthy rustic look to your decor.

8. Touches of Greenery

If you’re the type of person who is unwilling to commit to houseplants and keeping them alive, there are other ways to incorporate greenery into your decor.

Eucalyptus branches look elegant, smell amazing, and add a nice bit of height variation to your top of dresser decor.

Whether it’s eucalyptus or any type of faux greenery and branches, place them in a cute antique container for an added elevated touch.

9. Grasses and Branches

A great way to bring that rustic outdoors-y look to your top of dresser decor, but stick with a neutral color palette, is with pampas grasses or branches.

Branches or grasses placed in a large decorative vase creates a bold statement piece that will become a focal point in your bedroom.

What I love about natural decor like this is it can be swapped with other types of faux foliage to match the season you’re in.

10. Nature Landscape Prints

Bring the outdoors in with a large landscape print or painting of nature.

One of the best things about adding prints to your dresser is you can double your decor points by using a beautiful frame as well.

Layer the look with multiple prints or stacking mirrors and other vertically tall pieces.

11. Candle Sconces

Credit: @athomewith_grace

Adding candle sconces to either side of the wall on your dresser will bring a warm and vintage feel to your top of dresser decor.

Rustic decor isn’t all about natural materials and Earthy colors, but also about utilizing primitive style pieces for a timeless look.

I love the look of these simple and sleek sconces with classic white taper candles. Pro tip, purchase faux taper candles with electric flames so you don’t have to worry about dripping wax.

12. Eclectic Flea Market Finds

If you’re looking for decor that’s a little more whimsical and unique, check out your local flea market or small vendor market to find pieces with personality.

A dresser is the perfect place to utilize those small decor pieces that we all love to purchase but never know where to put.

Layer all of your favorite trinkets in different colors and textures to create a stunning and unique vignette that brings life to your bedroom.

13. Oversized Vases

Credit: @theoldhouseonmain

The bigger the dresser, the harder it can be to know how to decorate. When you’re working with large furniture, avoid layering small pieces because your space can quickly look cluttered.

The solution is to choose a couple large and oversized pieces to become the focal point and balance out the upper half of the room.

Large ceramic pots are a gorgeous way to incorporate some natural textures and colors. You can also customize the foliage or florals you place in them throughout the year.

14. Natural Materials in Neutrals

Rustic home decor doesn’t always have to be dark and moody. It can also be light, airy, and consisting of gorgeous neutrals.

If you love to decorate with bright whites, the perfect way to layer in other colors and visual interest is with light taupes and beiges.

Beige vases with white flowers and wood toned picture frames bring the perfect amount of balance to this white room.

15. Monochromatic Tone Layering

Credit: @hannah_naylor_

An easy and beautiful way to create a cohesive look for your top of dresser decor is to pick a color and run with it.

Color drenching is very on trend right now. Achieve this look by matching your decor to the color of your dresser.

By using the same color in slightly different tones, you can create a coordinated yet textured display. I love the use of dark browns in the bedroom above!

More than ever, small businesses need our support! More than ever, small businesses need our support!

Between tariffs driving up prices for business owners and consumers tightening their wallets more and more every day, it matters now more than ever where we spend our dollar.

Don’t get me wrong, I definitely understand the ease and often the affordability of Amazon, but I’ve learned some things in the 5 months I haven’t used Amazon.

1. I never needed 80% of the things I was buying. I fell victim to the “must have” lists and “get it now while it’s on sale” posts ALL. THE. TIME. It was nothing that ever added value to my life.

2. I didn’t even end up liking half the things I bought. Forever my biggest argument for shopping local with clothes and home decor is that you CANNOT know if you like something until you hold it in your hands or try it on your body.

3. I learned to be patient with my purchases. When you’re shopping in person, you have the luxury of walking around the store. You spend time with the item, you consider it next to other items, and you give yourself time to put something back that you maybe didn’t need.

4. I was BURNINGGGG through paychecks from small Amazon orders. My bank account has been THANKING me for the decision to shop small and secondhand.

I have my own feelings about Amazon and its effect on the Earth and on local economies, but I hope that at least one of the reasons above can convince you to decrease your time on Amazon and increase your time in local stores.

I know it can feel overwhelming to make the shift to small and secondhand, but that’s why I started posting content on this page in the first place!

To try and make that transition feel easy and exciting for everyone. So if you’re looking for tips or inspiration, be sure to follow @romanticizingrach!

I’ve found some AWESOMEEE secondhand pieces this weekend that I’ll be sharing in a haul tomorrow. You guys will be GAGGED.

So what do you think? Are you on board?? 😍😍

In honor of hitting 100K and this awesome @siouxfa In honor of hitting 100K and this awesome @siouxfallsstage issue being published on the same day, I thought I’d take the time to tell you guys more about me!

You all know my name is Rachel and I live in a charming 100 year old little cottage in South Dakota. What you probably don’t know, though, is how we got here or what I’m doing when not at home! Here’s some things to know about me in no particular order 😍

1. I grew up in the suburbs of Minneapolis! I love Minnesota with all my heart and am thankful to visit often as most of my immediate family still lives there ☺️

2. I studied musical theatre and dance at the University of South Dakota and have since leaned into a new role as choreographer in the Sioux Falls theatre scene! It has brought me so much joy to stay connected to this part of myself since becoming a mom. Sioux Falls theatre is the best 🫶🏻

3. I’ve lived in multiple states including New York and South Carolina, but have happily settled in South Dakota and I love this state with my whole heart 🦬

4. I started posting consistently last November and never could have guessed what an awesome community would have come from it! I’ve always been passionate about making my home a cozy and inviting space but never thought so many people would relate to my love for shopping small and secondhand 🥹

5. I work part time as a nanny/house manager for a wonderful family. It’s been the biggest blessing of my life to have a job that allows me to have Archer by my side everyday in his formative years. ❤️

I can’t express how grateful I am to have so many of you following along and giving me a place to be creative. Posting on this app has brought me so much happiness and has truly allowed me to find myself again after becoming a mom.

If you want to learn more about Sioux Falls theatre and meet the other amazing artists featured in this issue, make sure to check out the latest issue of @siouxfallsstage ! It’s a huge honor to be included among so many talented artists.

Something has been BUGGINNNGG me about this room f Something has been BUGGINNNGG me about this room for ages 😩

I absolutely adore the paneling in this room, and I think in my efforts to feature the beautiful wood, I tried to go minimal with the decor.

But what I actually needed was something with enough contrast to make the wood really pop!

I’m a sucker for a jute rug and initially thought that’s what I would put in this space. I fell DEEPLY in love with this unique shag from @revival , though, and I’m SO GLAD I decided to trust my gut. It’s the Rojda Shag Rug in 5x8! 😍

It’s the perfect amount of color and texture so the wood paneling gets to truly SHINE.

What do you think? Did I make the right call?? 🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️
