Everyone talks about summer as the season for getting outside and enjoying nature. If you ask me, though, the better time to enjoy the outdoors is in autumn.

Here in South Dakota at present, we are suffering from a record breaking mosquito outbreak that is making time on the patio feel less than desirable.

I’m already looking forward to the weather cooling down so the mosquitoes can back off and I can enjoy being in my yard again!

I’ve always been the type of person that would prefer to be outside on a chilly night wrapped in a knit sweater and blanket than baking in the sun.

That’s why, for me, prime patio time is in the fall! Bonfires are better, grilling is better, and the views are even better during these later months.

So don’t waste time on getting your patio ready for fall, because this is when you’ll want to use it the most!

Keep scrolling for my twenty favorite fall rustic patio ideas that you can copy to create the backyard oasis of your dreams this harvest.

Not all of us are looking to host large backyard dinner parties! Some of us just want our beautiful patios to ourselves for a glass of wine at dusk.

I love these dainty smaller patio tables because not only do they look adorable, but they take up very little space.

3. Lanterns All Over

The key to a cozy and calm atmosphere is all in the lighting. Don’t worry about cloudy days, instead fill your patio with lanterns and candles to create an amber glow.

Whether you choose a more modern design like the rustic patio ideas above or go for something a little more vintage, lanterns are sure to upgrade your space.

To avoid an unnecessary fire hazard, always opt for artificial candles. Choose ones that can be remote controlled for the ultimate elegant feel!

4. Baskets of Mums

When it comes to fall rustic patio ideas, the list simply wouldn’t be complete without including my favorite fall flower.

Mums infuse the spirit of fall to any space their placed, and it’s the perfect way to bring color into your decor!

These stunning floral arrangements come in all kinds of colors. Place them in beautiful baskets or rustic buckets for an added vintage flare.

5. Romantic Worn Fireplace

If you’re lucky enough to have any kind of outdoor fireplace or hearth in your yard, you absolutely must utilize it for fall.

Adorn the mantel with gorgeous autumn foliage or rows of brightly colored pumpkins.

There’s nothing more elegant than lines of taper candles in stunning candle holders adorning a table in the evening.

These candles exude cozy fall energy and are the perfect touch for your rustic patio if you plan to have guests over.

Just don’t make the mistake I would probably make which is leaving them lit after everyone has gone inside for the night!

7. Soft and Cozy Textures

Without a doubt, the easiest and best way to stay cozy outdoors on a chilly autumn night is to have plenty of soft blankets and pillows nearby.

This rustic fall patio looks so dreamy and comfy with all of the layered textures from fuzzy blankets to tufted pillows.

The more you can keep yourself warm, the longer you can enjoy the crisp autumn air late into the season!

8. The Pumpkin Patch

I mean obviously I have to include some classic orange pumpkins on a list of fall rustic patio ideas.

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, and decorating a neutral palette patio with bright orange pumpkins and foliage ain’t broke!

I’m also obsessed with the adorable pumpkin patch sign hanging over the gazebo. Make your patio feel like your very own orchard with this cute welcome sign.

9. Pinks, Creams, and Mauves

On the other hand, if bright oranges and reds doesn’t quite fit your aesthetic, you don’t have to sacrifice on the autumn decor.

These subtle pinks and mauves are absolutely stunning for a cozy autumn patio and present a much more muted color palette.

Artificial decorative pumpkins can be found in just about any color and pattern, so find ones to fit your very own sense of style.

10. Wood Accents

If you love rustic home decor and are actively seeking out rustic patio ideas, I probably don’t have to sell you on including wood accents in your space.

Anyone who has a rustic design style knows that adding wooden touches will do wonders to warm up a space.

Don’t shy away from more abstract pieces like this stunning wood sculpture above the fireplace! Interesting pieces like this can often be found at vintage or antique stores for super cheap.

11. Love Seats for Two

shop love seat benches

I don’t know what it is about benches, but I can never have enough of them. They’re so simple yet so charming.

If you have empty space you’re looking to fill on your patio, consider a bench for two filled with fall colored throw pillows.

Benches invite the passerby to sit, take a breath, and slow down to enjoy the changing nature around them.

12. Towering Corn Stalks

This is the type of fall rustic patio ideas I’ll be incorporating in my own space this year! I love harvest decor that looks like it could’ve been pulled from a far that morning.

It can be challenging to find patio decor that draws the eye upward and creates height, but that certainly isn’t a problem here.

Balance out your stacks of pumpkins and gourds on the ground with some towering corn stalks for the perfect autumn vignette.

13. Festive Homemade Garland

Credit: @dawnmoonhome

shop autumn pom garland

Make a fun DIY craft out of your rustic fall patio decor and create a home made garland!

I love this delicate little pom pom garland using autumn colors and know that I could easily make something like this for myself.

Sometimes decorating for the seasons doesn’t have to mean changing major pieces of your patio decor. It can simply look like adding some personal touches like a couple stacked pumpkins or a cutesy garland.

14. Assorted Funky Gourds

rustic patio ideas

shop artificial gourd sets

I was always the kid at the pumpkin patch that would skip right past the perfect pumpkins and go to the bin that had gourds and squash with warts and bumps.

These types of vegetables do all the design work for you because they’re naturally so beautiful and interesting to look at!

Find ten or fifteen gourds of all different shapes and colors to create this cozy rustic stack on your fall patio.

15. Overgrown Vines

Credit: @victoriamagazine

shop artificial vines

This is probably the most controversial on this list of rustic patio ideas, but I will stand by vines until the day I die.

I know many people cut back their vines for various reasons and to protect the siding on their homes, but I will never get over how beautiful overgrown vines look.

Whether you plant the real thing in the spring to create this rustic look, or recreate it with artificial vines, there’s no denying it’s stunning!

16. Grown Up Swing Set

Who said we have to stop enjoying swings once we’re adults? There’s nothing more relaxing than spending time on a swing on a cool evening.

Give yourself the gift of childhood joy once more by installing these whimsical patio swings in your backyard.

Not only are they beautiful and functional, but your guests will be absolutely obsessed when they see them.

17. Jack-O-Lanterns

Credit: @weboldlygo

shop jack-o-lantern planters

There are two types of people when it comes to fall home decor. There are those who decorate for the harvest, and those who decorate for Halloween.

One is not better than the other, but this one is certainly more fun and whimsical!

Make your own jack-o-lanterns for nostalgia’s sake, or purchase cute jack-o-lantern decor like this adorable planter filled with mums.

18. Paper Lanterns

rustic patio ideas

Credit: @marzena.marideko

shop paper lanterns

Like I was saying in previous rustic patio ideas, most people lean towards decorating either with a harvest theme or a spooky theme.

If you lean towards “the harvest” and like to decorate with seasonal foliage and cozy textures, then these paper lanterns will probably appeal to you.

This is the perfect alternative for string lights if you’re for a way to keep your space lit but in a way that’s a little more unique and magical.

19. Harvest Pillows and Throws

Credit: @kathryngamblephoto

shop autumn throw pillow covers

Look, there’s a reason that decorating with throw pillows is as common and popular as it is.

Throw pillows bring life to your furniture by adding colors and patterns, and they’re incredibly easy to switch out for the different seasons.

Invest in some good throw pillows inserts, then purchase different throw pillow covers for every season you like to decorate for the ultimate customizable decor.

20. Wicker Pumpkins

rustic patio ideas

A fun way to add rustic flare to your backyard patio decor is to take something classic, and find an alternative that comes in a rustic natural material.

For instance, I love these wicker and rattan pumpkin lanterns in the photo above!

It’s the perfect way to add a touch of country charm while still keeping things simple and classic.

I truly believe that the easiest way to make a difference in your every day life is to be mindful of where your money goes. 💸

I’m not usually a morning cleaning person so a lot of coffee was necessary for this one. The 10 oz Reserve Tumblers from @tossware are the perfect on the go cups for both Archer and I!

They’re completely shatterproof so I don’t have to worry about Archer breaking them (we’ve already lost a hefty portion of the ceramics collection 😭). Plus they are free of BPA’s and harmful chemicals so I know his juice is safe 😮‍💨

I love them because they are microwave safe and as a toddler mom, I can’t tell you the last time I finished my coffee while it was hot 😅.

So if you’re looking for a set of cups that are toddler safe but still have a cute design, you have to check these out! Use code RACHEL20 for 20% off your order (link in bio)!!

We have been so obsessed with this space and how it all came together 🥹

This room has quickly become everything I dreamed of for Archer since before he was born!

There are still a couple of details to finish in this room like a new light fixture and maybe some different storage baskets, but I’m in no rush to find the perfect pieces 🥺

I believe boys deserve beautiful rooms too and I tried to make choices that he would still love as he grows.

What do you think?? Was floor to ceiling wallpaper the right choice for this room? 🥰

I’ve always loved spring and summer but I’m enjoying the warm weather more than I ever have this year. Maybe just from getting my pink back?

Maybe from having a two year old that reminds me how AWEsome nature is every moment of every day?

Not sure I could pinpoint it but I can feel that this summer is going to be a fulfilling one.

In honor of little man feeling under the weather, In honor of little man feeling under the weather, here’s a tribute to the summer we’re trying to have 🤣

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, hands down the best part of being a parent so far is how much your kid will get you OUTDOORS.

This child would eat, sleep, and bathe outside if we let him. He’s absolutely feral and I LOVE IT.

You truly can’t couch rot as a mom, but it’s been the biggest blessing to spend more time outdoors and see the world through the eyes of a child.

I’m genuinely so pumped to get messy and scraped up with my wild child this summer 😍
