1. Unique Lighting Fixtures

Dark wood floors can have a tendency to look heavy in a smaller living room space. In order to balance out the room, consider installing a unique light fixture!
You’ll want to find something that is larger in size, draws the eye upward, and also has darker tones so it can contend with the flooring.
This chandelier in the photo above couldn’t be more perfect. It definitely catches your eye but is still light and airy enough that it doesn’t close off the top of the room.
2. Rich Leather Furniture

You don’t have to tell me twice to buy leather furniture! I love large leather pieces and think it’s about time for them to make a comeback.
Compliment the rich tones in your flooring with some deep shaded leather pieces like this stunning chocolate brown couch.
Sometimes the best way to compliment dark flooring is to make sure it’s not the only dark think in the room! Plus, leather furniture looks stunning next to other wood shades like the dresser and fireplace in the photo above.
3. Jewel Tones

Getting your living room color palette right will be crucial to falling in love with your dark floors.
Consider going for an accent wall color in a jewel tone. This stunning deep turquoise color makes the rich brown flooring really pop.
It also takes the room from what would otherwise be a simple, almost boring, modern design, to something really eye catching and memorable.
4. White All Over

For those who love a light and airy feel in their home, but don’t currently have an entire floor renovation in their budget, do not fret.
You can still achieve that beachy boho look you love with dark floors! The key is to draw the eye upward using as much white as you can throughout your space.
Don’t be afraid of a true bright white paint color, then drench everything that isn’t the floors. This design looks best when the ceiling all the way to the baseboards is matching white.
5. Textured Accents

It can be easy to overthink a color palette when trying to work with dark wood floors, but sometimes what your lacking isn’t the perfect color.
Adding texture to a living room with dark floors can really work to balance out the space and design interest to your home.
Think vases filled with foliage and grasses, benches lined with wicker lining, and gold or brass accessories to create the perfect vignette.
6. Simple Furniture

If you’re dark wood floors are in really great shape, then don’t detract from their beauty! Sometimes it is best to keep things simple.
Some cream furniture with clean lines and subtle texture are the perfect way to highlight the rich wood tones while still adding warmth to the room.
For those who love to add a little color, consider using a patterned rug to scratch that itch! I also love how the homeowners in the photo above have painted the divider doors as well.
7. Warm Neutrals

This cozy living room has mastered the art of using neutrals in a warm and welcoming way instead of a cold and sterile way.
Using neutrals that are lighter than the color of your floor will keep the room from getting too dark all over.
The key to using neutrals effectively is to combine a lot of different textures! In this photo, you can see the rug, the boucle chairs, and crisp linen curtains are adding a ton of visual interest to the monotone color palette.
8. Metallic Decor

I think gold and dark wood is one of those color combos made in heaven. Whether you are more of a gold or silver person, metallics will do wonders to brighten up your space.
The best thing about decorating this way is you can keep your larger furniture pieces quite simple, then treat the metallic accents like jewelry to dress it up.
Vases, mirrors, and decorative candle holders are just a few examples of places to incorporate a touch of silver or gold.
9. Go for Gothic

Now THIS is the kind of living room that I have dreams about. Any ACOTAR fans out there? Because this is giving the town house in Velaris.
Instead of trying to balance out your dark floors or lighten up the rest of your space, embrace the dark and run with it!
All black walls with jewel toned furniture and stunning antique gold accessories make this room a gothic boho dream space perfect for a movie night.
10. Funky Color Palette

As we are coming out of the millennial neutral renaissance, I and many others are struggling to find our way back to color inclusion in our home decor.
After so many years of gravitating towards beiges and whites, it can be hard to retrain your brain to come back to color, but the result is stunning.
I think autumnal color palettes look best with dark wood floors. Colors like rich mossy greens, Earthy terracotta reds, and bright mustard yellows not only go well with the floor, but with each other!
11. Unique Rug

There are probably people reading this post who are looking to cover their dark floors because it isn’t their design preference.
I would beg you to reconsider because I think dark floors are BEAUTIFUL, but to each their own! But a large rug is always an option.
Opt for something in a lighter tone with an interesting pattern or texture that will draw the eye away from floors. Then the dark wood becomes almost a frame to the rug that you may end up quite liking!
12. Matching Beams

This living room above is balanced so well and looks so inviting. I accredit that to their smart use of woo tones throughout the room.
They’ve matched their rich wood flooring to the wood beam that runs along ceiling. This makes the entire space look cohesive.
The unique light fixture and floating wood TV console add to the depth of the space but don’t weigh the room down either. This room is a great example of how to use clever design mirroring to achieve balance!
13. Textured Walls

If it’s in the budget, or if you’re one of the lucky ones who already has a feature like this in their home, consider adding some kind of texture to your walls.
This will make the dark flooring pop but also keep it from weighing the whole room down.
Whether it’s a brick accent wall, stone veneer all over, or even textured plaster, this trick will surprise you at how much visual interest it adds to your living room. To me, this looks expensive in all the best ways.
