If there is a perfect place in your home to go all out on a design theme, it’s in your baby’s nursery!
Nurseries should be colorful, whimsical, and full of fun and beautiful things to stimulate and entertain your little one.
This gives us the freedom to loosen up and have a little fun with our decor!
For all the western and rustic home decor fans out there about to have a baby, you have to check out these adorable cowboy (or cowgirl!) themed nursery ideas.
This list is full of precious and gender neutral options that you’re bound to fall in love with for your little one.
I won’t sugar coat it, there are a lot of long nights and hard times spent in a nursery during the early days.
One of the things that got me through some of those hard times was being in a room and environment that I truly loved and made me happy to look at.
Now that my baby is a toddler, it’s even more fun to watch him be able to interact with and find joy from all the little design choices I had made for him before he was even born!
All this to say, I’m all about a good nursery theme and investing in your nursery will never be a waste for you and or your baby.

1. Cow Print Blanket

In my opinion, the easiest place to start when implementing a theme for your nursery is with the items you’ll use the most!
A cow print baby blanket that can be used for tummy time looks great draped over the side of a crib. Also if you look closely, I love that this mom has a western themed Boppy cover as well.
Starting with smaller items will make decorating a room feel less overwhelming and you’re guaranteed to use the items you put your money into.
2. Custom Rope Name Sign

When I tell you I’m obsessed with these custom name rope signs from Little Cowpokes Co on Instagram, I truly mean it.
This is the perfect touch to any western themed nursery! It’s beautiful and will be extremely special to both you and your little one as they grow.
Hang this above your child’s crib or over their changing table so it’s somewhere that gets seen and appreciated often!
3. Antique Ranching Decor

Sometimes the best way to achieve an authentic cowboy look in your little one’s nursery is to shop the real thing!
This antique saddle placed next to the crib as decor in the nursery above is absolutely beautiful.
A saddle like this one will also present adorable photo opportunities! Sit your little one on the saddle for monthly update photos and treasure those pictures for years to come.
4. Cowboy Themed Books

When I think about how to design a room in my home, especially a nursery, my goal is to always blend form and function.
I want my themed decor items to have a purpose beyond looking cute. This is the best way to ensure that your items stay well maintained and the room taken care of.
Decorate your child’s shelves with rows of cowboy themed books that will not only look great and add to the theme, but can be used over and over again to enrich your child’s upbringing.
5. Long Horn Wall Decor

I love a good long horn wall hang. Don’t confine them just to your living room or dining room, but spread the love throughout the house!
A word of caution when hanging anything heavy above a crib, be sure to properly anchor to the wall with drywall anchors or the appropriate tools for your wall material.
It’s never worth the risk of something falling into your baby’s crib! The above crib wall space is the perfect place to decorate, though, because it’s a major focal point of the room.
6. Hanging Bandanas

How adorable is this line of hanging bandanas above this baby’s changing station?
When my son was little, I was addicted to the little bandana spit up cloths that are made to be clipped around baby’s neck to collect drool.
I had so many of them, and they were so cute! Don’t let those cute patterns and colors be hidden away in a drawer. Display them on hooks to add to your western theme.
7. Reclaimed Barn Wood Crib

If it’s in your budget to purchase a custom crib for your nursery, I highly recommend it.
The great thing about buying larger furniture items that reflect the theme of your room, is it means you have to do a lot less detailing work to achieve the look you’re going for.
Your baby will be in their crib for anywhere from 1-3 years or so making it the perfect piece to invest in something special!
8. Western Themed Mobile

One of my biggest regrets about my own baby’s nursery design was that we never got a mobile.
I think he would have absolutely loved one and they come in so many adorable designs and shapes now.
Mobiles are a great way to fill negative space in your nursery because they extend out into the room more than any wall decor would. I mean just look at those cute little cowboy hats and boots!
9. Cow Hide Wall Hang

Usually when people think of use cow hides in their home decor, they’re thinking of using it as a rug.
What better way to display these gorgeous pieces, though, then by hanging them on the wall like a rustic tapestry?
Cow hides can be found in all kinds of colors and sizes so you can find the perfect colorway for your little one’s cowboy themed nursery.
10. Western Wall Paper

I can’t emphasize enough how obsessed I am with wallpapers for nurseries right now. It’s one of the biggest trends in home decor this year and I think you can probably see why!
Nurseries are one of the rooms in your home where you can afford to be a little more playful with your design choices. Go bold with a western wallpaper accent wall.

11. Southwest Print Rug

One of the best and boldest choices you can make for your cowboy themed nursery is a large and colorful southwest print rug.
The rug is actually a very important choice to make for a nursery because you will spend a ton of time playing on that rug over the next few years!
So be sure to find a pattern you love, with good and durable quality, and that can grow with your little one because rugs can truly be a hefty investment piece.
12. Vintage Wooden Rocking Horse

What is a cowboy without his trusty horse by his side? Give your little one the gift of their first horse companion in the form of a vintage wooden rocking horse!
Not only do these look absolutely precious in a cowboy themed nursery, but my son LOVES his rocking horse and we’ve gotten continued use out of it for the past year.
We topped our’s with a little cowboy hat for some added western flare and have gotten some great pictures of our toddler on it.
13. Rustic Antique Furniture

Sometimes, the less obvious details in a room are what really pull a theme together. You don’t want all of your decor to be so on the nose.
Make your western theme complete by adding some rustic furniture items throughout the space. This will tie in that ranch feel that will give a more authentic vibe to your theme.
Plus, as your baby begins to grow, you’ll learn that no piece of furniture is safe from their toddler destruction. So better to go for a thrifted and less precious piece that can be battered and drawn on!
14. Antler Chandelier
Credit: @designersbrew
My home decor soap box that I’m always on is that lighting is one of the most important design elements of a room. Even a nursery!
The easiest way to transform a room from basic and boring to custom and unique is to swap the standard grade overhead lighting.
No more cliche “boob” dome lights for you. Opt for something that makes a statement like this beautiful antler chandelier instead.
15. Stuffed Horses and Cows
Credit: @citylifetoranchwife
One of my favorite ways to decorate a nursery is through stuffed animals! They’re adorable, come in so many different sizes and designs, and your little one will love them.
For a cowboy themed nursery, look for stuff animals like horses, cows, and bison to bring the ranch to your home (without the smell)!
The great thing about stuffies is they can be placed in so many different places throughout a room to add a touch of western flare. Some great places are framing shelves, on benches, on rocking chairs, or perched in your baby’s crib.
16. Western Gallery Wall
Credit: @refinestudios
What I love most about this gallery wall is it’s infusing some country western charm with a more modern design. The outcome is absolutely beautiful!
You can find so many great options for prints on websites like Etsy that make it possible for you to build the cowboy gallery wall of your dreams.
Purchase old wooden frames from thrift stores for a more vintage look, or source more modern frames like the sleek black ones above for a cleaner look.
17. Cowboy Bedding

My Achilles heel for nursery decor is one hundred percent crib bedding. Some people lose their minds over baby socks or hats, but I think crib bedding is the cutest thing ever.
You can find a ton of cute western print crib sheets on Amazon as well as pillow covers and baby blankets.
Always remember that it’s recommended for babies to sleep with nothing more than a mattress and crib sheet for the first year of life! So if you purchase any pillows or blankets for decor, make sure they are removed from the crib before bed time each night.
