When it comes to decorating for Christmas in my home, I’m such a sucker for the super traditional pieces and themes.
One of those traditional pieces that I just can’t go without, is a good old-fashioned wreath on the front door.
Nothing makes my heart sing more than going on drives in the winter and seeing everyone’s front steps and porches looking their best.
Obviously, people go all out with holiday lights, but there’s got to be something a little special for daytime as well.
Cue the Christmas wreath!
Here’s the thing about wreaths though- THEY’RE SO EXPENSIVE!
I vividly remember my first Christmas in our home when I was so excited to start decorating for the holidays like a big girl.
I went to purchase a wreath from the store and simply couldn’t believe my eyes at the price. Not on this girl’s budget!
One of the best things about them, though, is wreaths are incredibly easy to make from the comfort of your home AND with a small budget.
The more customized the better I always say! With these DIY rustic Christmas wreath ideas, you won’t have to sacrifice beauty for budget.
Plus, what’s better than crafts with the family around Christmas?

1. Natural Scented Wreath

Your DIY Christmas wreath doesn’t have to be only visually beautiful, but it also be beautiful to your other senses like scent!
Adorn your wreath with naturally scented items like fresh eucalyptus, dried oranges, and pine branches to create a potpourri within your decor.
A grapevine wreath works well as the base for this design, but any natural material or texture would do.
2. Wild Bird’s Nest

I love this bird’s nest inspired holiday wreath so much and I can’t wait to make these for my own home this fall.
To create this wreath, combine artificial nesting material with different sizes of branches and vines to achieve a wild look.
Then carefully choose what kind of bird you would like your nest to belong to and have it perched in the center. Bonus points if you give your bird a cute scarf like the photo above!
3. Classic Red and Green

Nothing warms my heart and feels more authentic to Christmas time than a classic plaid red and green ribbon when it comes to home decor.
Choose a pattern of your choice, though I’m particularly fond of plaid, then don’t be shy about piling and twisting and arranging your ribbon throughout your wreath.
Pair your ribbon with some green foliage, a few branches with red berries, and some elegant white florals to complete this rustic Christmas wreath.
4. Holiday Transition

For all my sustainable and lazy girl friendly decor queens out there, consider a wreath like this one that can transition you from Thanksgiving to Christmas and beyond!
Opt for some warmer toned foliage and cinnamon sticks to tie in a fall/Thanksgiving color palette. Then add pinecones and gingerbread stars to make things feel a little more wintery.
By combining some elements from fall and winter, you can make the perfect transition wreath to keep up the entire holiday season.
5. Petite Ornaments

If you’re limiting yourself to only placing ornaments on your Christmas tree, then you are totally missing out!
Ornaments can (and should, in my opinion) be placed anywhere your heart desires. Including on wreaths.
All it takes is one package of petite bulbs to fill out and elevate your DIY rustic wreath. I love the simplicity of the white ornaments against dark wood tones in this beautiful wreath.
6. Snow Berries and Burlap

There are two elements of this rustic wreath that I wanted to highlight and couldn’t decide which I liked better. So let’s talk about both!
I’m in love with this creative burlap ribbon and the country charm it adds to this simple wreath.
But I also love using red winter berries for holiday decor because it’s the perfect way to incorporate a pop of color. So instead of picking one or the other, do both!
7. Nothing but Pine

You may be looking at some of the wreaths listed above and thinking, Rachel, this is way beyond my DIY skills.
If this is you, don’t worry, I’ve got your back. Wreaths don’t have to be overly complex or filled to the brim with ribbons and pinecones to be beautiful!
All you need for a beautiful rustic winter wreath is a craft wreath circle and some wire pine branches that can be wrapped and molded around it.
8. Minimalist Star Anise

Ummm how absolutely stunning is this simple grapevine and star anise wreath? I’ve never seen anything like it and obsessed is an understatement.
Star anise is beautiful enough on its own, so don’t take away from its natural charm with anything overly busy or colorful.
Sometimes the simplest things are truly the most beautiful. The best thing about this is how easy and cheap it is to assemble!
9. Horseshoe Shaped

I am a huge fan of everything from Sincerely Marie Designs. If you haven’t stalked her Instagram yet, get ready to go down a stunning rabbit hole.
She posted this DIY wreath idea as inspiration for fall decor, but I think this design and shape would also make a beautiful Christmas wreath!
Just swap the brown bow for a deep forest green or stunning maroon red. You could even exchange the wheat tips for pine bundles.
10. Flocked and Frosty

Not everyone is a fan of the flocked for Christmas time, but I think it’s beautiful and definitely has its place in my home.
This frosty icy look makes me think of looking out the window on snowy winter mornings with a hot cup of coffee in hand.
To achieve this wreath style, just purchase everything from a silver and white color palette or your materials! Or use your regular green foliage, then spray with a white or metallic silver spray paint along the edges.
11. Wood Cookies

If you’re someone who likes to do DIY crafts often, then you might as well go ahead and buy yourself a ton of these small wood cookies.
I use these seriously all the time for different rustic decor projects because they’re cheap and always look beautiful!
This is definitely one of the easier DIY projects on this list of rustic Christmas wreath ideas, but it’s also one of the most unique!
12. Simple Branches and Bows

And in Romanticizing Rachel tradition, I’ve left my absolute favorite idea or last.
I don’t know what it is about this year, but the simpler wreaths have been calling to me. The wreaths I want to highlight from this photo aren’t the lush and full ones, but the minimalist wire ones in between.
I just think these simple golden hoop wreaths with a couple of branches and bows at the base are completely elegant. Especially with the golden bells hanging down.
Needless to say, I will be making ten of them and putting them EVERYWHERE in my home this year.
