Published: 04/15/24
Today was one of those Spring warm weather days where you can go outside for the first time in months without sleeves and feel totally comfortable. These are my favorite kind of days and get me so excited to start planning backyard parties for the summer!
I love everything about a good summer cookout. I love lawn games, hot dogs, ice cream, string lights, salads full of fresh vegetables and fruits, and all the different flavors of summer.
Something about spending time around a dining table with the people you love out in nature is the perfect way to end a summer day.
All day I couldn’t stop thinking about who to invite to my next backyard BBQ dinner party so naturally my mind wandered to the best ways to decorate my backyard.
I’ve compiled 15 ideas that I am absolutely obsessed with that will take your summer bbq party ideas to the next level.
These ideas are fun, easy, affordable, and won’t add any stress to your party planning process. The last thing I want for you on a hot summer day is to sweat MORE.
Before we get into how to beautify your yard for your guests, though, this is a great time to make a checklist of all your party needs to ensure you’re not missing any of the essentials.
Essentials for BBQ Dinner Party Ideas:
- Nail Down Your Menu: It’s important to establish early on whether you plan on providing all the food, or if it will be more potluck style. Ensure that you will at least have a protein for the main course, 3-4 side dishes, and some delicious summer desserts.
- Have Beverage Options: Homemade lemonade, margaritas with fresh squeezed lime juice, craft beers, classic sodas…which summer drinks you choose doesn’t matter as much as making sure there’s plenty to drink when it’s hot and sunny out! It’s always smart to include non-alcoholic beverages for those who need them.
- Have Entertainment Planned: Entertainment takes many different forms, but it’s smart to have some fun activities in your back pocket. Think yard games, a bonfire, a great playlist, or even a homemade photo boot!
- Plan for Parking: For any home hosted party, a great way to start things off on the wrong foot is not preparing your guests for the parking situation! You don’t want to start getting tons of calls rolling in as your guests arrive with people asking where to park. Let everyone know ahead of time where they should go.
- Let the Neighbors Know: Whenever you plan to have larger groups at your house, it’s courteous to let your neighbors know to be expecting! The most important thing to tell them is to expect cars, a little more noise than usual, and when the party will wrap up. It’s also the perfect opportunity to invite them and expand your community!
Now that you’ve tackled all the basics for planning your summer soiree, your taste buds are salivating with the flavors of summer, and you’re excited to have the perfect bbq party, let’s decorate.

1. Beautiful Banquet Buffet Tables

No matter what, the most important part of any backyard barbecue is going to be the food. Since all eyes will be on the meal, put some extra effort into making the buffet look nice!
Oftentimes you can find really lovely tables on Facebook marketplace that are being sold because they have some wear on them. Just cover with a tablecloth and use for your BBQ dinner party!
I love these gorgeous Farmhouse tables, but really any dining room table will do. We’re saying no to card tables this summer (I say that but I am NEVER throwing mine out).
2. Vintage Condiment Station

Condiments are one of those things that you absolutely must have for a good barbecue, but they sure don’t look cute in their multicolor plastic packages.
Taking the time to put your condiments in mason jars and setting them out in a vintage container seems like a small detail but will make a huge impact.
These are the kind of BBQ dinner party ideas that will take your party decor truly to the next level!
3. Mason Jar Utensil Holders

Whether you’re going the silverware route or the plastic utensil route, choose to make your utensils a statement piece at your dinner party!
Instead of just setting them out on the table, package them nicely in mason jars with gingham bows.
Not only does this look exponentially better, but it’s a much cleaner alternative because the utensil won’t be touching the table.
4. Homemade Party Favors

Everyone loves a little party favor and what could be better than sending your guests home with a little homemade gift!
Whether it’s some jam you made from fruit in your garden or you thrift vintage glassware for everyone to use that they can take home, it’s the thought that counts.
Goodbyes at a party can be awkward or maybe a little sad, but when you get to hand the guest a gift as they go, it makes it so much easier.
5. Classic Diner Baskets
Instead of the boring paper plates that most people use for their BBQ dinner party ideas, use these classic diner hot dogs baskets!
They’re adorable, colorful, and a little bit nostalgic in a way that your guests will love (especially if there will be children present!)
They really aren’t that much more expensive, but the impression it will leave on your friends and family alone will be worth the extra dime.
6. S’mores Tiered Tray

The best barbecue dinner parties end in the best backyard bonfires and the best backyard bonfires always end in s’mores.
Nothing tastes quite like summer to me as a good ol’ roasted over the first s’more. Watermelon is a close second, but doesn’t satisfy quite the same craving.
A s’more is the perfect dessert and your guests will be thrilled to see you’ve thought ahead with this s’more ingredient tiered tray!
7. Cute Matching Labels

A great and easy way to elevate your BBQ dinner party ideas is by printing and applying matching labels to your dishes!
Whether it’s on condiment bottles, water bottles, or even hot dog wrappings, the coordination will make a huge difference in your decor.
This easy, though maybe time consuming, project will look amazing in pictures and your party guests will go nuts over it.
8. Baskets for Side Dishes

Any Joe Shmo can put out side dishes on boring paper plates or tin baking pans. Don’t be regular ol’ Joe Shmo!
Bring some life to your table instead with these adorable baskets and some themed tissue paper.
Not only are they more wind-friendly than flat serving dishes, but they will also do a better job of protecting your food from insects.
9. Wheelbarrow Drink Station

How cute is this wheel barrow drink serving station? I love creative BBQ dinner party ideas like these that repurpose the things we all have laying around.
Whether you’re serving beers, sodas, or juice boxes, just fill the wheelbarrow up with ice and place your drinks in 15 minutes or so before start of party so they’re nice and chilled.
Plus the best part is, dumping out the ice water at the end of the night couldn’t be any easier!
10. Vintage Table Decor

When it comes to hosting a cute and quaint backyard barbecue, your best bet for the best decor will be vintage wares and finds.
Most everything you can find that’s new will come in monochrome matching sets or boring neutral colorways. They just don’t make them like this stunning tomato table set anymore!
Take some time before your party to check out your local vintage stores, antique shops, and even Facebook marketplace to find the absolute best table wares.
11. Gingham Tablecloths

If you’ve read pretty much any article on my blog, you know that I’m a huge sucker for gingham.
Something about the print has so much country charm and nostalgia that even adding small accents will make your party that much cuter.
Gingham will be included on any list of BBQ dinner party ideas from me. Great places to add gingham are tablecloths, napkins, banner garlands, and blankets.
12. Bottled Wildflower Centerpieces

Don’t go spending your entire party budget on florals for centerpieces, go flower picking instead!
It’s pretty ridiculous how expensive fresh flowers can be, so instead grow some flowers in your own lawn this spring that can be used to make lovely arrangements all summer.
If you’re not a gardener, ask your friends that are if you can borrow a bushel of blooms! Pop them in any kind of glass bottle like an old wine bottle or coke bottle and you have a lovely centerpiece.
13. Hay Bale Seating Areas

Depending on how many people you’re looking to host with these BBQ dinner party ideas, seating may be your biggest challenge.
Instead of asking around or buying a ton of different chairs that will become garage ornaments until the next party, look into getting a few hay bales!
They look incredibly cool, offer more seating per unit than chairs do, and if you’re like me and live in the Midwest, they aren’t too hard to come by.
14. Eating by Candlelight
One of the most beautiful ways to decorate your backyard barbecue is with tons and tons of candles!
Whether they’re lining a dining table, propped around a bonfire, or lined on the rails of your backyard patio, candles will make any night feel magical.
The more you can get your hands on the better. Pro tip, if you’re placing them on a table, use a disposable tablecloth so you don’t have to worry about the wax drippings.
15. A String Light Canopy
Similar to lighting your yard with candles but you can use them more than once, consider investing in string lights!
Creating a canopy above an eating area or bonfire area will look absolutely beautiful and create great ambiance for the entire night.
String lights can get a little pricey depending on what kind of bulb and brightness you want, but it’s an investment that you can use all summer long (and probably a few summers to come too)!
