Romanticizing Rachel

First time mom trying to romanticize the mundane parts of life.

About Rachel

Hey there!

My name is Rachel and I’m a 28 year old mom, homeowner, and advocate for simple and slow living. My life’s and subsequently this blog’s pursuit is to romanticize the regular and find magic in life’s mundane moments. I believe seeking gratitude in simplicity is the true key to sustainable happiness!

  • Mom Tips: I’m so in love with the transition from individual to mother and sharing the ways I attempted to make that transition a joyful one!
  • Hosting at Home: There are few things I love more than hosting at my home. Whether it’s dinner parties or holiday meals, I find so much joy in designing a gathering for friends and family.
  • Small Home Decor: Our lovely home is under 1,000 square feet and full of small corners and tight spaces! I can’t wait to share my small home decor tips.

In the year 2023, my life changed forever.

Within the span of 3 months, I bought my first house, moved in to said house, and I became a mom.

Though I would recommend to any woman to move during their third trimester (then you have an excuse to make everyone else do the heavy lifting), it came with numerous challenges.

The biggest of those challenges being, I now had to fix our fixer upper house while also caring for a newborn.

Many sleepless nights led me to parenting books, homeowner’s guides, and Google.

I learned so much valuable advice that I knew I needed to bring all that information to a consolidated home.

Facts About Me

  • My son, Archer, was born on 02/23/23 making him my perfect little Pisces baby.
  • I spent YEARS as a bartender and barista. I have a deep love for the service industry but especially espresso.
  • I’m a true theatre geek and studied musical theatre and dance in college. I still pursue performing in every city I go to!
  • My dream is to own a mountain home in Alaska!
  • I have lived all over the US from Washington, to Minnesota, to New York, to South Carolina, and now South Dakota. I’m not sure SD is the landing point, though, so who knows where we’ll go next!

Gave my 100 year old walls the after 40 in Hollywo Gave my 100 year old walls the after 40 in Hollywood treatment and now they’re smooth as can be 🤣🤣

I explored so many different ways of addressing our popcorn walls:

I thought about tearing out all the lath and plaster, but was overwhelmed by the mess and thought of dealing with lead and asbestos 😳

I got a quote from a contractor to drywall, but it was nearly $3000 for four walls 😅

That left me with the decision to do it myself. We used 1/4 inch drywall right over the textured plaster. Because it was so thin, we didn’t have to reframe any windows or doors!

Overall with primer and paint included, this came to about $500 and I couldn’t be happier with the result.

We left the popcorn ceiling this time, but I’m thinking about doing shiplap over top. Stick around to see all the ways I’m making my 100 year old beauty come alive again!

I only kind of mean it as a joke 😅😅

There’s nothing wrong with loving a trend and wanting to recreate it in your home! I get inspired by other creators and their homes on the daily.

But I do think that Amazon and LTK have made it a little too easy to copy and paste what you see in someone else’s home!

We’ve lost a little bit of the ability to be INSPIRED. I mean in a way that drives you to find your own personal expression.

I offer this as a challenge, that next time you see a photo of an interior that you truly love…instead of buying all the same things, take a deeper look.

WHAT about the photo do you love? Is it a color scheme? A certain layout or maybe a style of lighting?

Could you find something similar at a secondhand store that’s a better reflection of you and your home? I bet ya could!

And if it really is a certain item that just ticks every box for you, then go ahead and find that link and get yourself that piece 🙂‍↕️

Social media and content is designed to get you whipping out that credit card every time you open the app. The coolest form of resistance is being slow and thoughtful about your spending 😎

Plus, your home will automatically become a better of reflection of YOU and not your fav influencer 😍

Nothing makes me happier than being able to give back to the people who pour in to me, and I’m beyond grateful to @hamptonbyhilton for letting me give such an amazing gift!

If you’re looking to treat someone who means the world to you, consider the gift of a summer road trip with a stop at @hilton hotels. Because when you’re exploring America this summer, it matters where you stay.

Deadwood here we come 🤠

Amazon links have become so common that we don’t Amazon links have become so common that we don’t even think twice about using them, but should we?

I used to shop from Amazon WEEKLY. Picking up little things here and there to follow trends or utilizing the ease of fast delivery to my door.

But I never felt great about it knowing that there were small businesses out there that needed my money more. I just never knew where to find them.

That’s why I wanted to create this platform! To make shopping small and secondhand feel easy and sexy again.

If you’re not convinced yet, here are my top 3 reasons to stop shopping Amazon:
1. Sustainability- In 2019, Amazon’s carbon emissions (ONE company) surpassed that of the entire country of Norway. And it’s only grown since (like by A LOT).
2. Unfair Pay for Workers- Though they’re a multi-billion dollar corporation, most employees aren’t making enough to support their families.
3. THERE ARE NO ETHICAL BILLIONAIRES- I don’t want Jeff Bezos getting a penny from me 🥰

I also feel strongly that delivery services are the greatest contributor to the loneliness epidemic we’re experiencing today. We belong in public spaces, interacting with other humans at thrift stores and brick and mortar shops.

If any of this resonates with you, give @romanticizingrach a follow so together we can find the best small business alternatives and hold each other accountable to shopping secondhand 🫶🏻
